Ise Aiye ( Earth Works)  at Afin farm

Picture
There is no new water on the planet.

Each successive creature on earth have drank the same water.

When we speak we emit water vapor thus making clouds.

We benefit from a five billion year old legacy bequeathed by the earth. Humans have only been here for 200,000,000 years.  The beginning of the industrial age that ended  the agricultural age  gave birth to cast systems and cities.  This created havoc and dismay among humans who would vie for shares of fertile land to grow crops on. Fights and eventually wars, over arable land and access to fisheries broke out. Today, despite our vulnerability in nature we have conquered her and continue to wage war on our most loyal ally.  Two thirds of the world’s population lives in cities. This amounts to roughly 4 billion (with a B) people that the micro organisms (Earth) has to provide for and keep up with!  Some wise guy discovered the combustible uses for crude oil and all HELL broke loose!! What once were small farming and fishing villages, became cities like ShenZhen and Shanghai that boast of building 3,000 sky scrappers in 20 years with still more coming.

Faster and faster populations quadruple in shorter time spans. Humans are procreating at astonishing rates and most do so with no garden from which to feed their offspring. This population boom causes the continued destruction of life giving forest  so that corporations can build homes that swallow energy.

*Ahem*

What can we do differently? Many things!  Come to Oyotunji during our Ise Aiye (Earth Works) and become illuminated with the possibilities of a change for the future. I have been learning and now its time to teach. If you are interested and have no place to learn and want to work with like minded peoples, Oyotunji African Village is the place!! We will be building earth bag homes using the earth and peski plastic bags. We will show how tires can be used to build thermal mass. and of course we will grow food and demonstrate planting techniques. Agriculture started it all and tied us to a place, now we can use it to sustain our lives in our places. Be a part of the transformation!

Adupe Oooo (Thank You)   - HRM Oba Adejuyigbe Adefunmi

Grow with Nature Oyotunji's first learn/work/exchange program.

Learn how to build sustainable housing from recycled materials and how to grow sum veggies! As we see it each person on the planet should be able to build them selves a house from what's right under their feet... the earth. Everyone will not be able to have a wooden home--as I have worked in the construction field for over 15 years I have seen this first hand. Homes get slimmer and thinner using less wood and more synthetic materials. Why not use earth? Its every where!! Click on photo below to see more!!!! Adupe ooo

Earthbag construction

Picture
Earthbag room 10" diameter round structure made to sleep 2 persons. Walls are 9 inches thick bag filled and compacted with earth. The exterior is plastered with heavy duty stucco. The living space is warm in the winter and cool in the summer needing little energy to sustain temp.

Tire thermal mass construction

Picture
The most ubiquitous item found on the plane is used to construct a thermal mass using tires. This wall is 20" thick and faces south to maximize the suns energy during winter. Food can be grown indoors in green house. not only does this provide a dwelling low in energy cost but offers a solution and use for tires, cans, plastic bottles.

Composting food waste

Picture
Most soil in our cities have been damaged. So by composting and Veri-composting (worm composting) we can rebuild soil for future generations. Table waste, coffee grounds, wood chips and paper can be diverted from the land fields and composted thus creating nutrient rich soil.
Composting nitrogen and carbon.

Planting, prep and harvesting

Picture
Agriculture is what started cities and nations. Today our Nationdoes not grow half the food we consume. To feed 300 million Americans takes a lot of fossil fuels and coal energy. If we can grow small gardens in our yards and public lands we can offset the carbon foot print greatly. During our program learns about seeds, planting and harvesting food. You can grow alot of food on small plots of land. We want agriculture to change our society again.

Lets Build this Together!!!!

The African Village wants to provide guest housing in the future and your work weekend will supply the work and man power necessary to see this thru. Now you can tell your family and friends that you helped in building the African village in America. Too often we send money to the motels during village festivals. This cozy earthbag ile (house) will provide a comfortable place for visitors to experience the village festivals and create peace of mind for the weary traveler while creating an income stream for the community. Talk about cooperative economics:)!!
